British Community/Political Theatre Traditions

ENGL 271.950
instructor(s):

Community/Political Theatre brings together theater artists with people of a particular community of location, spirit, or tradition, to tell key stories of that community as a means of community celebration, and critique, organizing and activism. Various trends, movements, and theatrical works from British community/political theater practice will be looked at through both aesthetic and social-historical frames of reference. Specific British communities and practitioners will be looked at in detail, including field trips to learn about particular London neighborhoods where community/political theatre has played a role in community development; leaders in the field will be featured as guest speakers and "tour guides" to these communities. The course offers a unique opportunity for students to make contact with British people and learn about their lives, through the venue of community-based theater.
