ENGL 292.402
instructor(s):
W 2-5 Screenings T 7-9:00

This course explores, through particular examples, certain developments of European cinema in its heyday. It concentrates on the work of three directors, one Spanish, one Italian and one French: Luis Bunuel, Federico Fellini, and Alain Resnais. We shall compare the careers of these directors, as well as the shape of different national cinemas within Europe, looking at, among other things, the relation between documentary and fiction films, between film movements such as Italian Neo-Realism and the French New Wave, and between films made at home and those made in exile. But the close study of individual works will be at the heart of the course. Films to be viewed will include: Land without Bread (Bunuel), Night and Fog (Resnais), La Strada (Fellini), Hiroshima mon amour (Resnais), The Exterminating Angel (Bunuel) and 8 (Fellini).

1 screening and 1 class per week. Supplementary reading assignments, weekly written responses. Three critical/research papers (5-6pp each).
