Major British Novel 1660-1914

An introduction to the British novel, this course will move from the early eighteenth century to the early twentieth century, tracing in representative examples the changes in narrative techniques and thematic purposes that make up the history of the central literary mode of modern times. The class will be lecture-discussion, and student participation will be an essential part of the course. Readings will include works by Defoe, Richardson, Austen, Dickens, Eliot, Hardy, Conrad, and Joyce. There will be three papers (two 4-6 pages and one 10-12 pages) and a final take-home exam.
