In addition to reading most of Poe's fiction and poetry and a large sample of his critical writings, we shall consider some of the responses his works elicited from such other writers as Mark Twain, A. Connan Doyle, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman. In addition to two essays that should total twenty pages or more, students will write four short critical response papers, two in class, two overnight out of class.
