Intro. to American Literature

ENGL 200.001
instructor(s):
TR 10:30-12

This survey course will examine some of the major literary forms and cultural issues that distinguish American literature produced before 1900. Beginning with Native American creation myths and trickster tales, our reading will sample works about colonial and national emergence, the literature of American slavery, experiments in describing an American selfhood, works about post-Civil War race relations, and fiction that explores the new consumer culture and the changing status of women. Although this is a lecture course, our class sessions will include a good deal of discussion. Requirements: two papers, a midterm exam, and a final exam.
