Major British Novel 1660-Present

This course is intended to introduce students to novels written in English between the end of the seventeenth century and the present, with emphasis on the period between 1680 and 1800. We'll sample the variety and fluidity of novels, asking how the genre has been defined and how it has functioned in different times and places. Two papers, two exams, and in-class quizzes will be required.

Students who are required to take English 203 for the English major may substitute any *two* of the following courses: English 45, 55, 65 (245, 255, 265 may be included by permission).
