Introduction to American Literature

A survey of significant trends in the development of the literature of the U.S. from the colonial period to the beginning
of this century.  Traditional "great books" (Melville, Twain) will be balanced by some less familiar but equally influential
texts (Douglas, Stowe).  Requirements: 2 papers, midterm and final examinations.   

Note: English majors may take English 82 or 83, instead of English 200, to satisfy the American Literature requirement.
