The course will focus primarily upon five poets (Shakespeare, Donne, Jonson, Herbert, and Marvell) and particularly upon lyric poetry. But we will also be addressing generic questions (the sonnet, the elegy, the ballad, the country house poem) and historical questions concerning "literature," gender and sexuality, and the political formation.
