The purpose of English 98 is to acquaint students with the central skills used in the publishing industry, which I define as embracing the print and broadcast media. We study publishing techniques and history, but the main emphasis is on practical, hands-on experience with printing, publishing, and especially editing. Hence the semester will include much attention to the actual editing of many of the kinds of writing that one can expect to encounter in a publishing house, on a magazine, or in a broadcasting job. Students will analyze different kinds of publications and will also learn to produce newletters, books, and other printed artifacts. * Those who register for the course must complete a questionnaire about their previous publishing experience *.
