18th Century Culture: 1725-1800

The course consists of fourteen weekly units, each one covering a different aspect of cultural history of the period; there is one Philadelphia-area field trip.  Literary texts include fiction of Richardson, Johnson, Walpole, and William Beckford; poetry of Pope, Johnson, Smart, and Cowper; and much miscellaneous political and aesthetic criticism.  Units include political cartoons, the picturesque, the gothic, sentimentalism, and the French Revolution in England.
