From podcasts to newspapers, magazines to YouTube shorts, journalism is a craft oriented around explaining the world. When done effectively, journalism is truthful, compelling, and rooted in age-old storytelling techniques, regardless of technological form. This workshop-based course involves practicing what makes a good journalistic piece in any medium: Gathering facts, interviewing strangers, building structure, writing ledes and kickers, abiding by fairness and ethics, and entertaining. In-class activities include: interviewing people on and around campus; listening to extraordinary works of audio; discussing assigned articles, podcasts, and videos; analyzing contemporary issues in journalism and media; and collaboratively workshopping original writing. Students will be required to write brief reactions to reading and listening assignments, research and write news stories, and produce a capstone 10-minute narrative podcast.
