The English Renaissance in Context
The English Renaissance in Context (ERIC) project, directed by Rebecca Bushnell and Michael Ryan,
will mount on the web facsimiles of early editions of playtexts and other
rare documents from the University of Pennsylvania Special Collections and
Furness Shakespeare Library. The project will make original texts
accessible to scholars from around the globe and will provide online tools
for browsing through and comparing multiple documents. The website will
also include a pedagogical apparatus to provide "guided tours" and
exercises for students and to show teachers how to use these materials in
the classroom. Documents will include sixteenth and seventeenth century
texts--such as early quartos of Shakespeare's plays, Holinshed's
Chronicles, and Crooke's Mikrokosmographia--as well as
later materials--such as promptbooks from the eighteenth and nineteenth
centuries. Facsimiles for the project, without the supporting tools, are
made available as soon as they are ready on the Furness homepage.
The project is funded by a three-year NEH grant and is scheduled for
public access as early as late 2000.
Addendum: The ERIC site is now fully functioning and can be accessed at http://dewey.library.upenn.edu/sceti/furness/eric/.
