Sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning, this conversation will focus on ways to prepare students to learn in our classes – considering both what messages to send about ways to approach learning in our fields and at college, and how to send those messages so students can absorb them. All faculty are invited to participate.

What made something “mediocre” in the Middle Ages? We often assume that if a manuscript, literary text, or work of visual or performance art has survived from the medieval period, it is exceptional in some way. But what of things that are just OK? What can this middle ground teach us about form, aesthetics, language, and reception?

MADELINE MILLER grew up in New York City and Philadelphia. She attended Brown University, where she earned her BA and MA in Classics. She has taught and tutored Latin, Greek and Shakespeare to high school students for the past twenty years.
She has also studied at the University of Chicago’s Committee on Social Thought, and in the Dramaturgy department at Yale School of Drama, where she focused on the adaptation of classical texts to modern forms.

TOM SLEIGH'S many books include Station Zed, Army Cats, (John Updike Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters), and Space Walk (Kingsley Tufts Award). He has also received a Guggenheim Fellowship, an American Academy in Berlin Fellowship, and two National Endowment for the Arts grants. He is a Distinguished Professor at Hunter College and works as a journalist in the Middle East and Africa.

Catherine Innes-Parker is a Professor of Medieval English literature at the University of Prince Edward Island and a Visiting Research Fellow at the Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies. An expert on women's literacy and manuscript ownership, she is the author of numerous articles and editor of the recent volume Anchoritism in the Middle Ages: Texts and Traditions (University of Chicago Press, 2013).
