also offered as: THAR 275, CINE 225
instructor(s):
MW 2-3:30 pm

 This course will explore the evolution of gay and lesbian theatre and film

in America since around 1920, focusing on the increasing sense of visibility

that arrives with social and political upheaval from the 1960s onward.  The

syllabus will include works by canonical as well as lesser-known

playwrights, including Tennessee Williams, Tony Kushner, Larry Kramer, Paula

Vogel, Maxwell Anderson, Lillian Hellman, Mart Crowley, Albert Innaurato,

William Finn, Charles Busch and others; we will also consider

ground-breaking films and television (CRUISING, WILL & GRACE), as well as

drag and performance pieces developed by Lypsinka, Five Lesbian Brothers,

Charles Ludlam and more.  Finally, a portion of the course will be devoted

to the anarchic rereading of mainstream art known as camp.
