ENGL 040.002
instructor(s):
TR 1:30-3

This course will begin with a thorough grounding in poetic tools such as meter, rhyme, rhythm, imagery, and revision by way of poems ranging from medieval ballads to modernist querying. After the fundamentals have been established, we will focus our attention on the evolution from the seventeenth to twentieth centuries of the sonnet, the narrative poem, and the elegy. Class participation, short exercises, three formal papers, and a final exam will determine your grade. Our texts will include the shorter _Norton Anthology of Poetry_, Paul Fussell's revised _Poetic Meter and Poetic Form_, and a course pack.
