Major British Poets, 1660-1940

ENGL 040.950
instructor(s):

This course will focus on British poetry of the last three centuries, taking advantage of our London setting to visit such sites as poets' corner in Westminster Abbey, the house of John Keats in Hampstead, or to view the art of William Blake in London museums. We will read representative poems by major British writers, especially Pope, Blake, Wordsworth, Keats, Shelley, Byron, Tennyson, Browning, Arnold, Hardy, Eliot, and Auden. We'll concentrate on how to read poetry and write about it. Coursework will include frequent short writing assignments and a final essay to be submitted after students return from London. This course can satisfy one of the arts and letters distribution requirements in the College or one of the poetry survey requirements for English majors and minors.
