20th Century British Literature

ENGL 061.001
instructor(s):
TR 12-1:30

This class provides an introduction to English and Irish twentieth-century literature. We will begin with some key texts of the modernist period, including T.S.Eliot's The Waste Land, Virginia Woolf's To The Lighthouse, James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and Jean Rhys's Good Morning, Midnight. We will then move on to texts from the postwar period and the present day, such as Kingsley Amis's Lucky Jim, Angela Carter's Nights at the Circus, and Irvine Welsh's Glue. These works will be considered from a specifically literary perspective, but also as responses to their historical situation, considering especially questions of gender and sexuality. Written requirements will include five short exams, two 6-10 page papers, and some less formal assignments.
