Creative Non-Fiction Writing

ENGL 135.601
instructor(s):
W 4;30-7:10

This workshop-style course focuses on the techniques of creative non-fiction. We will write essays, both formal and informal, some memoir and other narrative, and a book review.

During the semester you will write 12 short pieces after a menu of choices designed to illuminate specific issues of style and form. You will also write two polished workshop essays on any topic you choose. Occasionally, you will be asked to read aloud from your shorter works.

You will be discussing assigned readings from _Best American Essays_ and other sources, as well as the work of your fellow writers. Some of our conversation will take place on the course listserv. As in any writing workshop, your active, thoughtful participation is essential. Students of any discipline will benefit from this course-- you need not be an English major.
