Writing for Children

Fundamentally a writing course conducted as a workshop, this course attempts to address all the elements of creating good fiction aswell as the special needs of children in the three basic age groups (under 7, 8, 12, and teens) and the various genres of children's literature (picture books, problem novels, fantasy, etc.) Students, who are pre-selected on the basis of narrative writing samples, may write in any genre (except verse) and for any age level. Minimum writing requirements, in addition to exercises, are threesuccessfully completed short stories, picture book texts, or novel chapters. Reading requirements are three children's books (for these, a Free Library of Philadelphia card is desirable), with written reviews, and selections in Egoff et. al., Only Connect: Readings on Children's Literature.
