Ideology and Imagination

This course examines romantic conceptions of poetic imagination and the role they play in twentieth-century debates about art and politics. We will focus on the relations between literary and philosohical argument, and on the implications of literary theory for Marxist discussion of ideology. Authors include Kant, Schlegel, Kleist, Shelley, Marax, Brecht, Freud, Baudelaire, and Benjamin. Conducted in English. Readings in English. German available for those who read German.
