The English Major
(Cinema Studies Emphasis)

The English Major with an Emphasis in Cinema Studies is designed for students who wish to pursue literary study in conjunction with seminars taken in the Cinema Studies Program.

Total Courses:

The English Major consists of 12 courses numbered from English 016 to English 599. Students must earn a grade of C- or better for courses to count toward the major. Please note that Writing Seminars in English that fulfill the Writing Requirement (English 001-009, 011-012, and 125) do not count toward the major.

The Core (6 courses):

Students must take one course within each sector as follows (Fall 2008 semester):

Please Note: In up to two sectors, a student may substitute a 200-level or 300-level seminar ending in the same number. Thus, for example, a student could take English 250 instead of English 50 to satisfy Sector 4. Please note that these courses cannot be double-counted as literature seminars (see below).

The Advanced Seminars (5 courses):

  • Students must take English 91 (Film History) and two Advanced Cinema Studies Seminars numbered 200 or above. At least one of these must be in non-English, non-American cinema.

  • Students must take at least two Advanced Literature Seminars numbered 218-599. One of these must be in literature before 1900. These two seminars CANNOT be double-counted in the core.

    The Elective (1 Course):

Having take 6 core courses and 5 seminars of his or her choosing, a student must take 1 Free Elective to complete the major. This elective must be a course in the English Department.
