The English Major
(Creative Writing Emphasis)
The English Major with an Emphasis in Creative Writing is designed for
students who wish to pursue literary study in conjunction with seminars
taken in the
Creative Writing
Program.
Total Courses:
The English Major consists of 12 courses numbered from English 016 to
English 599. Students must earn a grade of C- or better for courses to
count toward the major. Please note that Writing Seminars in English that
fulfill the Writing Requirement (English 001-009, 011-012, and 125) do
not count toward the major.
Students must take one course within each sector as follows:
Sector 1: Theory and Poetics: Can be satisfied by taking
any one of the following: ENGL 23, 32, 34, 40, 62, 66, 69, 88, 94, 95, 96,
100.
Sector 2: Language, Literature and Culture: Can be satisfied by
taking any one of the following: ENGL 18, 19, 21, 48, 58, 70, 71, 72, 77,

Sector 3: Early Literature to 1660: Can be satisfied by taking
any one of the following: ENGL 17, 20, 22, 25, 26, 29, 31.
Sector 4: Literature of the long 18th-century (ca. 1640-1832):

Sector 5: 19th-century Literature: Can be satisfied by taking
any one of the following: ENGL 51, 52, 53, 55, 57, 60, 73, 75.

any one of the following: ENGL 56, 59, 61, 63, 64, 65, 67, 68, 74, 78,
80, 83, 86, 89.
Please Note: In up to 2 sectors, a student may substitute a
200-level or 300-level seminar ending in the same number. Thus, for
example, a student could take English 293 instead of English 93 to satisfy
Sector 2.
Students must
take 3 Creative Writing Seminars numbered 10 or between 110-199 (please
note that English 125 counts neither as a seminar nor toward the major).
Students must take at least two Advanced Literature Seminars numbered
218-599. One of these must be in literature before 1900.
How many Free Electives students may take depends on how many of their
seminars they double-count in the core (see the Note above).
