Assignment #1: Due February 1:
Select ONE topic from the list of four below. Write a one-page sermon and a
one-page speech (300 words each) on the same topic -- the sermon written from
a Whitefield-Calvinist perspective (along the lines of Whitefield's "The Pharisee
and the Publican") and the speech written from a Franklin-Capitalist perspective
(along the lines of Father Abraham's speech in Franklin's "Way to Wealth"). In
class on Friday, be prepared to perform at least one of your sermons...with gusto!
Bring copies of each to hand in. This is a graded assignment.
Here are the four topics; choose one:
- The site of the former Trade Center is sacred ground.
to be delivered from the viewing platform at Ground Zero
- Every Wharton student should imitate Benjamin Franklin.
to be delivered in front of the Franklin statue in front of College Hall
- It's your responsibility to make other people's lives better.
to be delivered standing on a soapbox in front of Christ Church in
Philadelphia
- The International Monetary Fund could save the world.
to be delivered at a future IMF meeting in London
