Lyons, France

Lyons (or Lyon), in east-central France, is situated at the confluence of the Rhône and the Saône Rivers.

Beginning in the Renaissance, Lyons was an important European center of finance, publishing, and silk manufacture, and its university is one of the most important French universities outside Paris. The French Revolution, however, devastated the economy of the city, and Lyons was attacked by the republican forces in 1793.
