Arles, France

Arles, a city in southeastern France, northwest of Marseille, where the Rhône divides to form its delta.

Arles was one of the most important cities of the Western Roman Empire: a 20,000-seat Roman amphitheatre and portions of the old Roman walls still stand. In the first century CE, St. Trophime founded a bishopric there, one of the first in the Christian era, and which endured until 1790.
