Nehemiah Grew

Nehemiah Grew, 1641-1711 or 1712, English botanist and physician.

His first important work appeared in 1672 when he published An Idea of a Philosophical History of Plants. He was secretary of the Royal Society from 1677, and published his second great work on the Anatomy of Plants (1682), in which he described the function of flowers and announced the sexual reproduction of plants.

Grew was the first to use the phrase "comparative anatomy."
