The William Patrick Day Essay Contest
At the end of every year, a $300 award (sometimes split into 2 awards of $150 each) is given to the best essay by an English Graduate student, as judged by three faculty members who have been chosen by the GEA. The applicant must not have won the prize in the past. Essays must be 25 pages or less (notes, works cited, and other appendices exculded). Your name should be nowhere on the essay itself, but include it and the essay's title on a seperate cover sheet. 2 copies need to be made. One can submit anything they wrote this past year for a class (or a work for a dissertation that meets the page limit).
The prize is named in honor of Patrick Day, formerly a teacher and (both formerly and currently) a friend of Penn graduate students.
The deadline for submissions is sometime in April, as announced by the GEA Academic Representative. The results are announced at the annual GEC end-of-year party.
For 2007, the deadline is Tuesday, May 29th. Two copies must be submitted to Jill Shashaty and Greg Steirer by 12 Noon.
