This course will examine the nineteenth-century novel through the lens of British colonialism. We will focus on imperial expansion and its relation to notions of domesticity, formations of class and race identity, and constructions of gender and sexuality. Throughout, we will examine the ways in which the novels grapple with definitions of national identity and “Englishness.” Authors will include: Willkie Collins, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, Rudyard Kipling, and William Makepeace Thackeray. This course will require a one short paper, one longer paper, and regular blackboard postings.
