In this class we explore how modernist literary techniques and styles were fashioned in new ways and to different ends by non-Europeans writing after the Second World War. We will closely compare works from different periods in order to ask if there are any enduring ethical or political questions that connect British modernism to postcolonial literature. We will compare key modernist authors with important non-European writers. Thomas Hardy, Joseph Conrad, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce on one side, and Salman Rushdie, Chinua Achebe, Tayeb Salih, G. V. Desani, Pramoedya Ananta Toer, on the other. We will also read theoretical essays on modernism that examine its relation to the vexed term, “modernity”. Requirements include short weekly assignments, two essays and two class presentations.
