Modern Drama: From Now to Then

A review of some of the most important plays that classify as modern drama. The course will begin with the 2003 Tony Award for best play: I Am My Own Wife by Doug Wright and will then trace the development of Modern drama from William Shakespeare to Tom Stoppard with examples of works by Edward Albee, Samuel Becket, Bertold Brecht, Eugene O'Neill, Arthur Miller, Luigi Pirandello and August Wilson. The class will attend a performance of August Wilson's Fences, presented at the Arden Theater. The objective of this course is to explore modern plays as literary and cultural artifacts representing our times and ourselves.
