Film & Social Change
John Katz profile

TR 12-1:30 (Screenings 5-7:00 PM Mandatory)

We will explore the effect that the medium of film has had upon social, political and personal change-and vice-versa. There is a large body of films which have attempted to influence politics, social change, economics and the law. We will concentrate on three issues-probably war, trade unions and equal rights and see how they have been portrayed in films which try to "make a difference," Among the filmmakers we might study are Ken Loach, Gillo Pontecorvo, Dusan Makavejev, Jean-Luc Godard. Michael Moore and Herbert Biberman. There are mandatory film screenings every week.
