17th Century Poetry: Metaphysicals to Milton

This course will focus primarily upon six poets: Shakespeare, Donne, Jonson, Herbert, Marvell, and Milton. While we will concentrate on lyric poetry, we will address generic questions (the sonnet, the elegy, the ballad, the country house poem etc.) and historical questions concerning gender and sexuality, religion, and the category of "literature."
