Fulfills General Requirement III: Arts & Letters

A selective survey of modern and contemporary short fiction. We'll start with turn-of-the-century writers like Rudyard Kipling and Thomas Hardy and continue through D. H. Lawrence and Graham Greene to contemporarywriters like Allen Sillitoe, Angela Carter, and Ian McEwan. We'll consider the short story as an art form as well as a window onto society and culture. We'll make use of our London location whenever possible. Coursework will include frequent short writing assignments and a final essay to be submitted after students return from London.
