Fulfills Distributional Course in Arts and Letters

This course will introduce you to some of the most important literary works in English before 1700. Our particular focus will be on the development of an English lyric tradition, but we will also study other genres, such as narrative poetry, prose, and drama. Authors we will study may include Chaucer, Margery Kempe, and Gawain-poet, Skelton, Wyatt, Spenser, Sidney, Shakespeare, Marlowe, Marvell, Herbert, Donne, and Milton. Requirements will include two papers, fulfillment of the reading assignments, and regular class attendance and participation.
