"Locating the Eighteenth Century English Novel"

In this course, we'll move through a series of works of eighteenth-century prose fiction, looking closely at issues of place and space as they operate within these works. What interpretive values can we place on setting and location (interior/exterior, at home/abroad, city/country) during this time period? Reading assignments will include works by Behn, Defoe, Fielding, Lennox, Johnson, Burney, Austen. There will be weekly response papers, one longer paper, and an in-class presentation.
