This course is intended to introduce students to the crucial literary interventions of the indigenous peoples of the United States from the 1960s to the present, and the social, political, and cultural contexts in which these interventions are taking place. We will look at works of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry taken from a list of writers that includes: Leslie Marmon Silko, Sherman Alexie, Diane Glancy, Gerald Vizenor, Simon Ortiz, Wendy Rose, Adrian C. Louis, Luci Tapahonso, Craig Womack, LeAnne Howe, Vine Deloria, Jr., James Welch, N.Scott Momaday, Linda Hogan, and Ray A. Young Bear.

There will be three formal papers, as well as weekly informal writing assignments.
