This seminar will provide an in-depth exploration of James Joyce's writings. In our discussions we will attempt to identify Joyce's contributions to literary modernism, and to examine the major political, social and literary influences upon his poetry, drama, and novels. We will also address the implications of Joyce's stylistic and narrative experimentation, its intersections with issues of national and sexual politics, and the importance of Ireland in these contexts. We will read the following texts by Joyce: Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Exiles, Collected Poems, The Critical Writings, Giacomo Joyce, and excerpts from Ulysses. Course requirements: three papers of varying lengths and one in-class presentation.
