Nancy Shawcross profile

M 5:30-8:30

The goal of this course is to introduce the student to major British novelists publishing between the late 17th century and the beginning of World War I. Although it is not possible to include all such novelists, we will read one title by each of the following authors: Aphra Behn (1640-1689), Daniel Defoe (1661?-1731), Samuel Richardson (1689-1761), Henry Fielding (1707-1754), Frances Burney (1752-1840), Jane Austen (1775-1817), Emily Bronte (1818-1848), George Eliot (1819-1880), Thomas Hardy (1840-1928), and Joseph Conrad (1857-1924). Class discussion and additional readings will comprise excerpts from scholarly treatises and from contemporary essays about the genre of the novel and its development in England. Requirements: class attendance and participation, mid-term and/or final exam, 2-3 papers.
