ENGL 271.950
instructor(s):

Cross-listed as Theater Arts 275.950
This course is an introduction to feminist theatre, focusing on the creative and political efforts of feminist playwrights, performers, and performing ensembles in England. Our readings will offer background on feminist theatre theory and history; we will study the plays of such writers as Caryl Churchill and Timberlake Wertenbaker, and the productions of such companies as the Women's Theatre Group and the Monstrous Regiment.

The course will be conducted in a seminar format, with heavy emphasis on class participation. Students will be responsible for leading discussions and making oral presentations; there may also be an opportunity for in-class performances. The writing requirement for the course will be one ten-page paper. Whenever possible, this class will draw on productions seen in "The London Theatre Experience," and on field trips and other resources available to us in London.
