This course will concentrate on literary theory in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The topics we will address include theories of ideology and literary form, of the subject and authorship, of gender and sexuality, and of the materiality of the text. Readings will include selections from Marx, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Foucault, Lacan etc. but we will also be studying the practical implications of these theories for literary analysis.
