English 040.303
Major British Poets 1660-Present
Paul Korshin profile

MWF 11

My section of English 040 will present a survey of poetry from Pope in mid twentieth-century Britain. I plan to cover different groups of poets starting with the second third of the eighteenth century (Pope, Gray, Collins), continuing with the second third of the century (Smart, Cowper, Blake), the first third of the nineteenth century (Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats), the second third of the nineteenth century (Tennyson, Browning, Arnold), and four twentieth-century poets (Housman and Eliot; Auden and Larkin). The reading load is not heavy, but there will be suggested collateral works, plus three to five essays on varying approaches to British poetry.
