Topics in Women and Literature

We will read a selection of novels and memoirs--all written by women in the twentieth century--which depict alternative roles or possibilities for women. These depictions may take the form of fantasy, such as Charlotte Perkins Gilman's *Herland* and Virginia Woolf's *Orlando*, or the form of memoir, such as Gertrude Stein's *The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas* and Isak Dinesen's *Out of Africa*, as well as novels such as Colette's *The Vagabond*, Miles Franklin's *My Brilliant Career*, and Marguerite Duras's *The Lover*. Requirements: class attendance and participation; two short papers; and a final exam given during the last class.
