The sentimental novel flourished in the second half of the eighteenth century; there are significant precursors, and sentimental styles persist in English fiction well into the twentieth century. There is a philosophical side to sentimentalism, while this school of thought affects other genres of literature, especially drama. In this course, we will read every major exemplar of the genre, except Richardson's *Sir Charles Grandison*, including works by Sarah Fielding and her brother Henry, Sterne's *Sentimental Journey*, Mackenzie's *Man of Feeling*, Francis Burney's first two novels, and a variety of shorter works. The writing for the course includes two short papers and a longer critical essay.
