The course will deal with well known, and less well known, dualities: inspired poets (Smart, Blake) vs. the Evangelicals Cowper, Anna Barbauld, Hannah More); canon builders and reactionaries (Samuel Johnson, Boswell) vs. innovators (Mary Wollstonecraft, Godwin), and revolutionaries (Thomas Paine) vs. conservatives (Edmund Burke).
