In this course we will read 10 of Shakespeare's plays, attending to the role of drama in Elizabethan and Jacobean society, the often bizarre textual history of the plays (the first printed version of Hamlet's famous line was "To be, or not to be, I there's the point"), and modern productions. Midterm, final, one essay, and some short projects (e.g., textual editing, commentary on a modern production of a scene).
