Our class takes up a selection of major poets in the English tradition, from Dryden to the Modernists. The course will stress close attention to formal features, and will require fairly intensive engagement in close reading and explication of individual poems. To the extent possible, we will contextualize our readings within the most influential cultural currents from which they emerge. Three short (3-5pp) papers, two one-page, single-spaced presentation papers, and a final exam.
