John Katz profile

TR 12-1:30

We will explore the effect that the medium of film has had upon social and political change. Many films have influenced politics, economics, society, equal rights and the law. We will concentrate on three issues - war, trade unions and civil rights - and examine how selected films have affected and been influenced by these issues. The films will include Dr. Strangelove, Spanish Earth, All Quiet on the Western Front, Norma Rae, Salt of the Earth, Harlan County USA, Native Land, Ice, Gentleman's Agreement, Pinky, Blacks and Jews and The Invisible Man. Readings will include film history texts, novels and autobiographies.
