American Modernism
Bob Perelman profile

MWF 12

We will read a range of the so-called high modernists (Pound, Eliot, Williams, Stein, Moore) and as well as a number of other writers, ranging from some poets involved with the Harlem Renaissance to popular poets like Lindsay, Millay and Frost. The overall effort will be to situate the modernist drive to produce complex works within the very different moment of the burgeoning of mass culture in America. We will read quite a bit of poetry of many different kinds; some novels and other prose; we'll look at a few films and perhaps hear some songs.
