Since the 1700s, the novel has been the dominant literary form of modern western culture, dramatizing its values, problems, and even its contradictions. This course will trace the novel's development and expansion in Britain from the mid-eighteenth to the early twentieth century and seek to understand how (among many other things) a representative selection of major novelists articulate Britain's role in the culture of the last three centuries. Among the authors we will read are Defoe, Fielding, Austen, Dickens, Eliot, Hardy, Conrad, and Woolf. There will be three papers, two about 5-7 pages and one long paper of about 15 pages.
