This course will attempt to survey modernism in Britain from its inception to its demise after WW2. We shall engage with different genres, including poetry, short stories, drama and novels. We shall more precisely focus on the various strategies by which modernism questions the construction of subjectivity, especially in the domain of national and sexual identities. The texts we shall read are: T. S. Eliot, The Waste Land and Other Poems. J. Joyce, Dubliners. May Sinclair, Mary Olivier: ALife. V. Woolf: Mrs Dalloway. E. Waugh: Decline and Fall. Dylan Thomas: Selected Poems and Under Milk Wood. Requirements for the course include at least one oral presentation; two shorter papers of eight pages, and a final paper of about fifteen pages. There will also be a few unannounced in-class quizzes. No final exam.
